The key is, read the short Upgrader's guide and you'll be fine! Once you understand the Section Type > Section Layout thing, it's really quite simple.Īpologies for the long answer, but I hope it helps. If your needs are anything like standard, that's probably all you'll have to do.Īs usual, describing this sort of thing is harder than doing it - the whole process takes a couple of minutes to do. Instead of having to bend the Binder hierarchy into shape to get the output you want, in V3 you effectively just tell the compiler what each document is (Section Type), and then tell it how each type will look (Section Layout). The actual compiler has several more features than before as well, but that's the main difference. By default each compilation output (PDF, Ebook, Screenplay etc) has several default Section Layouts for you to choose from, but you can of course amend them or create your own. what the document heading looks like, whether it has a number and is it 'ONE' or '1', which font it's in, does it have a page break before it or not and so on) is called a 'Section Layout'. When you come to compile, you tell the compiler how the documents of each Section Type should look. There's now the concept of 'Section Type': essentially, you tell Scrivener that this document is a Chapter, while that document is an Appendix and it doesn't matter where they are in the hierarchy. In V3, that's all been made a lot simpler. That worked well until you wanted to, say, have Chapters with Numbers, but the Prologue and Epiloge without numbers-then you had to fiddle around with the binder to get it to work. The big difference between V2 and V3 is that in V2 everything depending on the hierarchy of documents in the binder - if it was at first level it was printed as a chapter, if it was at second level it was printed as a scene and so on. There's a specific v2 to v3 compilation tutorial though and if you follow that you'll be fine. The problems seem to come when people (understandably) think there's a one-to-one mapping between the old and the new and don't read through the documentation. If you accept it's different from the previous version, it's more logical and has more features than the old version.
